Edna Barnum married Frederick Percy Lawton in 1901.

Mrs. F. P. Lawton, 86, wife of the late Dr. F. P. Lawton and long a. civic leader in Traverse City, died Friday at Munson hospital following a protracted illness. Edna Gates Barnum was born in Van Buren County, Michigan, on October 5, 1875, to Frank H. and Florence Gates Barnum. She received her education in Ypsilanti, which was then the family home. She graduated from Michigan State Normal College, Ypsilanti, and taught in the public school systems at Jackson and Traverse City. In 1901, she married Dr. Lawton of Traverse City who preceded her in death in 1930. Two sisters, Annette Barnum Power and Blanche Barnum Coolidge, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Eleanor Lawton at the family home, 540 W. Seventh Street, this city, and Mrs. James McKervey of Rudyard, Michigan: a son, Dr. Latham B. Lawton of Casper, Wyoming; three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. During 60 years of residence here. Mrs. Lawton was a leader in community and civic affairs. She was the first president, organizer, and life member of the Garden Club: an officer and life member of the Traverse City Woman's Club; member of the Congregational church; member of the Women's Golf Association and an active golfer at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club where she won the R. Floyd Clinch Women's Golf Trophy; member of Medical Auxiliary; member of city zoning board; charter member of the D.A.R.; and an active worker in the Red Cross during World War I, and the PTA.
Funeral services will be held from the Reynolds funeral home here Monday at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Ted Ringsmuth of the First Congregational church officiating.
Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
