He married Betty Jo Robinson, who preceded him in death in 2004. He then married to Genavie "Jean" (Green) John, in 2011.
He was a graduate of Fordland High School, where he played several sports.
He was a Police officer with the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) for more than 25 years. Following his retirement from KCPD, he moved to the Fordland area and was elected County Sheriff, where he served from 1989 to 1993.
