Elizabeth "Betty" Bunnell Bauder, of Richmond, Virginia, lived an extraordinary life and died peacefully on June 5, 2012. She was born May 28, 1929, the first child of the late Frederick H. Bunnell and Louise Taliaferro Bunnell of Richmond.
She is survived by her only child, Page Wharton Bauder; and her sisters, Louise Brander Bunnell Nemecek and Ellen Terry "E.T." Bunnell; and a niece and nephews.
She grew up at 2012 Monument Avenue, along with three generations of a gracious and colorful southern family. She graduated from Collegiate School for Girls, then attended Mary Washington College, where she distinguished herself as Dean's List student and Yearbook Editor, while working part time as a model at Thalhimers and Miller & Rhoads. She graduated in 1951, receiving the college's highest honor, The Jeffersonian Cup. Her career with Thalhimer's Department Stores spanned 40 years, and was where she met her former husband, Fred Wharton Bauder of Miami, Florida. She started as a copywriter, then became Fashion Coordinator and Corporate Fashion Director in the 1960's. In 1971, she "broke the glass ceiling", becoming Vice President, Sales Promotion & Visual Presentation, and eventually Senior Vice President & Sales Promotion Director, until retiring as the top-ranking woman in the corporation in 1990. One of her most cherished contributions was conceiving "Snow Bear", the beloved Christmas character.
Ms. Bauder's extensive community involvement reflected her enthusiasm for creating a vibrant, progressive city and her personal passion for children's education and the arts. She served on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Metro Chamber of Commerce, The Richmond Ballet, Junior Achievement, Downtown Richmond, The Children's Museum and Theatre IV. Her Advisory Board and voluntary consultant work included J. Sargeant Reynolds, Richmond Tourist & Convention Bureau, The Women's Bank, The Women's Resource Center at University of Richmond, VCU, Department of Fashion, and The Valentine Museum. She was a member of the Junior League, a charter member of the Council of the Virginia Museum, and member of The Women's Club and Bolling-Haxall House Foundation. Ms. Bauder was honored to be chosen YWCA Outstanding Woman (Communications) and Richmond Christmas Mother in 1998. She entered retirement energetically, lending her voice for radio commercials, and interviews for public television, print, and historical organizations on "Richmond Memories" and the "golden age of fashion and retail". She served as Interim Director of the Children's Museum, and was honored as Volunteer of the Year for reading to children at Swansboro Elementary, Richmond Public Schools, and encouraging reading achievement with "Snow Bear Teas". Her greatest retirement joys involved children, reading, theatre and surrounding herself with beauty in interior design, art collecting and gardening.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 19, 2012 at 3 p.m. at St. Giles' Presbyterian Church, 5200 Grove Avenue. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
