Edward Messerschmidt was born November 21, 1890 to Martin and Christina Halland Messerschmidt in Kowel, Russia.
We know nothing of him as a young boy in Russia. We know that that the county changed names and their boundaries change depending on who won the war that time.
We know that as a very young boy he left home and started for the United States by way of Liverpool, England.
When you look at the map of where the town of Kowell is and what counties he had to cross over to get to Liiverpool England is enough to wondered just what the whole story is. He left Liverpool England on the Vessel SS Caronia amd arrived in New York City, and was checked in by way of Ellis Island on November 17th, 1907. Edward was 17 years old at the time. There have been stories that a man that Edward was friends with through all his life called Shorty. He was good friends with the family as they grew up. There was never any talk about Russia or their past as far as Gordon or his brothers remember. But they did talk the German language sometimes.

In 1910 he was living in Elmwood MN with the family of Louis and Mary Alterbernd as a hired hand.

Edward met Clara Alma Brusch and they were married on April 20, 1929 in Moorehead, Clay, Minnesota. From this union came 6 boys, and finally the last one was a girl.
