Evelyn K. Hansen, 93, of Idaho Falls, former resident of Blackfoot, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012, at her home in Idaho Falls.

Evelyn was born Aug. 14, 1918, to Anton Henry and Hazel Chapman Kruse in Blackfoot. After her father passed away when she was 10, her mother married Bladen Ozra Capell. She was raised in a family with five sisters, two stepsisters and a stepbrother. Evelyn attended school in the Blackfoot area until she lost her hearing at the young age of 9. She continued her schooling in Gooding at the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind. Upon graduation, she worked in Boise as a beautician prior to moving back to Blackfoot.

On Nov. 26, 1941, Evelyn married Remes Edwin Hansen in Blackfoot. Their union was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Together they worked on a farm in Goshen and raised their three children, E. Landis "Dusty," Tony and Janet.

She worked as a silk finisher at White Star Laundry in Idaho Falls and later at Kens Kleaners in Blackfoot. She eventually took employment with Roger Brothers in Idaho Falls so she and Edwin could once again work together as they'd done on the farm in Goshen. Following retirement, the couple spent many wonderful years between their home in Blackfoot during the summer months and Overton, Nev., during the winters. She was preceded in death by Edwin on Dec. 16, 2000.

Evelyn was a member of the LDS church and served in the Relief Society and as a visiting teacher, and was also instrumental in starting the area's first ward for the deaf. With her husband, she served in the Las Vegas, Nev., St. George, Utah, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, temples. She was very active in the Idaho Association of the Deaf and volunteered with the foster grandparents program.

Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her husband camping, hunting, fishing and gardening. They had a camper named the "Wee Wiggle Inn II," which provided many fond memories. In her later years, she enjoyed quilting, visiting with her friends and family, flowers and going to lunch.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Dusty (Jeanne) of Blackfoot, Tony (Edette) of Boise and Janet (Phil) of Idaho Falls; sisters, Alice Nugent of Rigby, Louise Canepa of Carmel, Calif., and Teddy Curry of Nampa, Idaho; a stepbrother, Leonard Sampson of Ottis, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; her parents and stepfather; two sisters, Millicient Kruse and Hortense Hermansen; stepbrother, Bladen Capell; and stepsisters, Helen Sampson and Ada Boren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave. in Blackfoot. A viewing will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and for one hour prior to the service Thursday. Interment will be in Grove City Cemetery.
