Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory

SHELBY-James W. Walker, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday June 10, 2012.
Born in Cleveland County on Oct. 15, 1927, he was a graduate of Appalachian State University with postgraduate studies at Clemson University. James taught high school for thirty-nine years, retiring from Crest High School in 1988.
James served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps as an aviation mechanic and was stationed at MCAS Quantico near Washington, D.C. and at MCAS Cherry Point in North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lawson C. Walker; his mother Lula Warlick Walker; a brother, Donald L. Walker and wife Polly; a sister, Geraldine Walker Christopher; and a brother-in law, N. Joseph Wright. Survivors include his wife, of 62 years, Doris McMurry Walker; two sons, Gary L. Walker and wife, Susan; Philip K. Walker and wife, Suzanne; a sister, Mazel W. Wright; a brother, Raymond C. Walker and wife Rosetta L. Walker; grandchildren Emily Walker and Kenny McCourt, Danielle Cline and husband Derek; James Walker and Amy O'Bryan; and Lawson Hart Walker; great-grandchildren Hayden Walker and Lane Cline.
Remembered as a hunter and a fisherman, he also had a lifelong second career as a farmer renowned for his much sought after tomatoes.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cecil M Burton Funeral Home and Crematory and at other times the family will be at the home
Celebration of Life Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church

Burial: church cemetery with Military rites.
