Jacob was a farmer and a stockgrower. He came to Greene County, Pennsylvania as a young man, approximately 16 years of age, with his father. His first wife, Mary Woodruff, died shortly after the birth of their fourth child. Jacob was buried in the family cemetery on the farm which is still in possession of Eakin descendants. Jacob could not write as evidenced by his 'Mark" on his will.
