Edward L. Whitesides was the last of the three sons of Major and Isabella Whitesides who died during the civil war. He was a Sergeant in Co B, 28th North Carolina Infantry and was killed in action during the battle at Spotsylvania Courthouse.

Edward died one week after the death of his father and is buried adjacent to his parents and his two brothers who died during the war.
