CAVE-IN KILLS THREE

Three men were killed, two suffered painful bruises and several others escaped death or injuries by a narrow margin Sunday noon, when nearly 10 tons of dirt slipped from the side of an open ditch, 18 feet deep, and avalanched onto workmen who were preparing to tunnel under the Santa Fe right of way nine miles east of Emporia. The men, employees of the Oklahoma Construction company which is running a pipeline from Wichita to Kansas City, were engaged in cribbing the walls of the ditch with heavy timbers to avert a slide but had not succeeded in getting their cross braces in when the accident occurred.....

Warren Kenneth Austin, 21, the only Emporia boy who was killed in the accident was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Austin, 3 South Cottonwood. He was born August 13, 1907, at Americus, and is survived by his parents, four brothers and two sisters. Funeral arrangements have not been made.....
