Abner Abbott of Andover, Maine, per historical notation, walked from his home in Andover to Woodstock in his 20s, where he was a farmer, and, in Woodstock, married Laura Hammond of Woodstock on 16 December, 1824. Seth Sterlin, Minister of the Gospel, presided over the marriage.

Andover had been a part of Massachusetts just before Abner was born. It was purchased from Massachusetts by Samuel Johnson and Jonathan Stevens, Sr. from Andover, MA in 1791. The town was incorporated on June 23, 1804 as East Andover, renamed Andover in 1820 when Maine separated from Massachusetts.

On July 18, 1826, in the Woodstock Observer, it was noted that Abner took over the Grist Mill in the town and pledged 'his best endeavors to please all who may oblige him with their custom.'

Abner and Laura began their married life together in Woodstock, and ultimately settled in Barnard; their home is shown on an 1869 Map of Barnard. They had five children:

Laura Ann Abbott 1826 – 1911 - Married Carlos Ellis
Louisa Maria Abbott 1830 – 1883 - married first Ira McCollum and married second William Waterman Myrick after Ira's death.
Sarah Jane Abbott 1830 – 1871 (married Elmer Frances Abbott - from an unrelated Abbott branch)
John Emery Abbott 1834 –
Clarissa Lorinda Abbott 1837 – 1877 (marred Edward S. Sylvester)
