Homer Gordon Dyer, prominent in industrial YMCA work here almost 40 years, died in Augusta, GA., yesterday, eight days after suffering a heart attack.

Mr. Dyer, 67, had been attending a religious conference in Augusta. He died in an Augusta hospital.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Johns-Rideouts Funeral Home.

A resident at 408 Dyer Drive, Roebuck Manor, he helped organize the YMCA in North Birmingham, Huffman and Acipco. He retired Acipco in 1953 after 38 years of service.

He was born at Mellow Valley, near Ashland, and taught school in Etowah, Blount and Covington Counties. He worked as a chemist at TCI in Ensley before going to Acipco.

Although he had no children, he helped rear and educate others and worked with under-privileged children.

He was a member of the Jefferson County Social Works Club, Club of All Nations, Alabama division of the Southern Regional Council on Race Relations, and director and treasurer for Spastic Aid of Alabama.

Mr. Dyer also served on the Birmingham and Jefferson County Fair Rents Committee, and was a member of the North Birmingham Draft Board 14 years during World War II.

He belonged to the Bahai World Faith and was a former chairman of the Birmingham Local Spiritual Assembly of Bahais. Formerly he taught Bible classes at the Acipco Baptist Church for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Cora Thompson Dyer.

Services will be those of Inter-World Faith.

Active pallbearers will be B. B. Warren, Lawrence McNeil, Hubert Matthias, K. Ross Peeples, Jr., J. H. Berry and E. H. O'Daniel.

Honorary pallbearers will be the board of directors of Spastic Aid of Alabama and the board of directors of American Cast Iron Pipe Co.

NOTE: The Dyer Family History Book, as well as family members, state that Homer and Cora had twin daughters who died young. They helped to raise Martha Conolla Dyer, daughter of Homer's Uncle Buford Irvin and Martha Frances Knowles Dyer. The picture above of Homer and Cora is with two twin baby girls, which it is believed are their daughters, both of whom died young. Cause of death not known, nor is the date or burial place known. Anyone with any information is welcome to send to me via this site.
