The son of Ignatz Machalewski and Catharina Mushinska, Felix Machalewski was born April 25, 1843 in Konitz in the Kingdom of Prussia. His hometown is now known as Chojnice, Poland

Recruited by Captain Francis Hardtmayer and enlisted in the Garibaldi Guards on 20 APR 1861.

Mustered into the unit as a PRIVATE at Pittsburgh on 1 MAY 1861.

Mustered into State Service as part of the Ninth Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, Company B on 22 JUN 1861 at Camp Wright by Lieutenant Chandler Hall.

Mustered into federal service at Camp Jackson, Washington, DC on 28 JUL 1861 by Lieutenant John Elwood, 5th U.S. Infantry.

Received a gunshot wound, at Charles City Crossroads on 30 JUN 1862, which caused him to lose the middle finger of his left hand taking off 3 joints. The finger was amputated.

Sent for treatment at General Hospital #1, Davis Island, NY.

Listed as deserting at New York -- Date Unknown.

The 5 APR 1863 Deserter List states that he was last heard from at Davis Island, NY.

He apparently returned to service.

Called out of the Battle of the Wilderness on 4 MAY 1864 and sent home.

Mustered out of service with company on 12 MAY 1864 in Pittsburgh by Captain Gerhard Henry Fuhren and Captain William Jefferson Moorhead, 17th U.S. Infantry.

He participated in the following campaigns: Dranesville, Mechanicsville, Gaines' Mill, Charles City Crossroads, Bristoe Station and Mine Run.

Married Julia Kempf at St. Marys German Catholic Church, Allegheny City on 25 APR 1865.

Died from Gastric Cancer on 15 AUG 1906 at 2237 Southern Avenue, Carrick, Allegheny County, PA. Buried at St. Wendelin Cemetery on 17 AUG 1906.
