"He was born May 8, 1894, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The family moved to Red Bluff in 1900 and then to Chico in 1912, where he was employed at Hubard and Earl's Hardware Store. He married Nell Smith on Sept. 11, 1916, in San Francisco.
"In 1916 he went to work for Parker Hardware. Arens then moved to Fresno, where he was employed as a salesman for 10 years. In 1923 he returned to Chico and started his own nursery, which he operated until 1950 when he retired.
"Arens enjoyed camping and was an avid fisherman. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias; a 50-year member of the Eagles Lodge, No. 218; SIRs; and the Chico Grange.
"In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Beverly J. Nichols of Valdosta, GA; a son, Herbert W. of Chico; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
