Chico Enterprise-Record, Tuesday, June 3, 1986: "Bud Arens. Cryptside services for Chico native Herbert 'Bud' Arens, 67, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Glen Oaks Memorial Park. He died Saturday in a local hospital.

"Arens was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Chico to Herbert and Nell Arens. He was educated in Chico and attended Chico State University. While attending CSU, he was a track and football star. He also attended the University of California, Davis.

"In 1941, Arens joined the Army Air Corps and was a bomber pilot throughout World War II. He was stationed in North Africa and he received the Distinguished Flying Cross with 5 Oak Leaf Cluster. He served in the military for 27 years until his retirement in 1968, at which time he worked at various jobs in the Chico area.

"He married his wife, Arlene, in 1972 in Boston, Mass., and they returned to Chico. He was a member of the Chico Elks Lodge No. 423 and the Retired Officers Association with the Air Force.

"In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Gail Smith of Atlanta, GA, and Junan Meikle of Longwood, Fla.; a son, Michael Arens of Richvale; a sister, Beverly Nichols of Valdosta, GA; and five grandchildren.

"The Rev. David McMartin of the Evangelical Free Church of Richvale will officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today in the Brusie Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements."

As 1st/Lt. Herbert Arens piloted B24 41-11803 in "Operation Tidal Wave" one of the most daring raids of WW2. Coming in at tree top level the 98th BG destroy Rumanian oil refineries. The Pyramiders earn Presidential Unit Citation, all of the crews receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. Lt. Arens crew may have aborted the mission due to mechanical problems, however the Lieutenant continued a long and successful career in the 8th AF WW2. - Details of WWII service courtesy of John Dowdy.
