Sketch of the Life of John P. Benson

John P. Benson, who died Tuesday, January 4th, as a result of a stroke of paralysis, which he suffered the Saturday preceding and from which stroke he never regained consciousness, was born September 24th, 1849, at Sweetwater, Wyo., while his parents, Ezra Taft Benson and Eliza Perry Benson, were en route to the valley.


The family is located in Bountiful where they have always lived.


When but two years old, he went to live with his grandmother Ann Perry, making his home with her until he was married, which was October 16th, 1871. He married Evelina Lydie Hale, who, together with six children survive him. They are, Mrs. Horace S. Egan, Salt Lake City; Mrs. John L. Egan, Big Horn, Wyo.; Mrs. Ephraim Briggs, Blackfoot, Ida.; J. Perry Benson, Woods Cross; Ezra T. Benson, Darlington, Ida.; Mrs. Alvin Briggs, Woods Cross. He has forty-three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


The deceased served as a counselor to the late Bishop Richard E. Egan of South Bountiful for twelve years, and was a member of the Bountiful City Council soon after Bountiful was first incorporated.


He filled a mission in Ireland in 1890.


Funeral services were held in the South Bountiful meeting house, on Thursday, January 6th, at 1 p.m. The speakers were Joseph Hogan, President Stearns Hatch, Wilford C. Wood, and Bishop S.C. Howard. The Misses Ida and Gwendolyn Hatch rendered a duet, and Nephi Hepworth a solo. There was a very large attendance and many beautiful floral offerings. Interment in the Bountiful City Cemetery.
