Second Lieutenant Afflerbach had been living in Runnels Co., TX when he entered the service and was a member of Battery A, 987th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 40th Infantry Division.

He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on June 12, 1953 and was presumed dead on June 13, 1954.

His remains were never recovered.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

For his leadership and valor, Second Lieutenant Afflerbach was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
