Son of George Harbaugh (1774-1853) and Anna Snyder (1779-1837). He was born into a religious family, his father George having founded the Reformed Church at Waynesboro, PA. He was the youngest of 12 children which included his brother the Rev. Henry Harbaugh (1817-1867). David took a partial course at Wittenberg. He was licensed to preach at Canal Dover, Ohio May 1, 1849. Three months later, he married Margaret Augustine on August 28, 1849. Over the next 18 years they would have 12 children. David Harbaugh was ordained at Wittenberg Synod in 1851. He went on to serve churches in Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois. He organized and was connected with Mendota College at Mendota for 13 years. He went to Waterville, Kansas in 1869 serving Waterville, Monrovia and Valley Falls. During this time his son Walter Gunn Harbaugh died at the age of 18, and a few years later his mother in law, Catharine Augustine also died there in Kansas. They are both buried at "the Harbaugh Cemetery", grandmother and grandson, side by side. David Harbaugh retired in 1890 and moved to Colorado, Springs, CO. His wife Margaret died in 1901, and he died there in 1911. His son, Samuel Lincoln Harbaugh (1862-1911), died a few months after him and is also buried at Evergreen Cemetery (Some information from Harbaugh History, page 96).
