Evidence of Samuel's middle name per his mother's will/probate: Indiana, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1798-1999
Probate Date 1 Jun 1896Item Description Wills, Vol 1, 1893-1929; Wills, Vol 2, 1905-1922
Harriet Hoke divided her property as follows. First; All real and personal property left after debts and expenses paid to daughter Eliza Jane Gard. Second; If any of her estate was to remain after the death of her daughter Eliza Jane Gard the remainder was to go to her daughter Sarah Elizabeth Gard. Third; If any of her estate was to remain after the deaths of Eliza and Sarah it was to go to the heirs of her two sons and one daughter Samuel Franklin Gard Solomon Thornton Gard and Margaret And Rose (Rose Gard [Aswritten]. Fourth; Samuel F. Gard, Solomon T. Gard and Margaret A. Rose were each to receive the sum of one dollar. The real estate was listed as being 10 acres of land in one area and 3 acres in a different section."

On page 413 it further states that Harriet Hoke died 2 September 1896 and that the will was submitted to probate 10 September 1896". This will is found in St. Joseph County Indiana Record of Wills Book 1.
