Maxine was born on the family farm in Eureka Township. She graduated Simpson High School in 1941. In June of that year she and her sister June were in Kiesel's Department store in Salina, Kansas where June introduced her to Richard Varney. Maxine married Richard Eugene "Dick" Varney 4 October 1942 in Salina, Saline, KS. Both of their sons were born in Salina. By 1962, Dick & Maxine were living in San Antonio, Texas where he had been transferred by Montgomery Ward, and she took a job for Business and Professional Services in San Antonio. They later moved to Weatherford.
