Gladys Mae Thorson, age 79, formerly of Chouteau, died at the Liberty County hospital in Chester, Wednesday evening, Dec. 9th, of an apparent heart attack.
Gladys was born in Langdon, North Dakota to Mabel Lewis and Gilbert Thorson, March 18, 1908. She came to Montana with her family in 1913 and they homesteaded north of Joplin. She grew up in the Joplin community and graduated from high school there in 1926. She attended college at Dillon, Billings and Bellingham, Washington and received her teaching certificate. Gladys returned to Joplin and taught school there. In the years that followed she served as an elementary teacher in several communities, including White Sulphur Springs, Helena, Chinook and Fort Peck.
In the late 1940's Gladys suffered a debilitating back injury following a bus accident, so she moved to Boise, Idaho, to be near her sister. In 1970 she moved to Couteau to be close to her ailing mother, who died the following year. Gladys has lived at the Sky Line Lounge in Couteau ever since. About two weeks ago she was transferred to Liberty County Nursing Home in Chester.
Gladys believed in education. She was well-read and well-informed on current issues. Religion was important to her and she was well versed in the Bible. She enjoyed plants and gardening, and loved music and singing. In her younger days she played the piano.
Although Gladys never married, she maintained strong loyalties to family and friends.
She is survived by three sisters, Alviva Tabor of Lincoln, Montana, Violet Leichner of Boise, Idaho, and Beulah Anderson of Fairfield, Montana; one brother, Cliff Thorson of Joplin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Joplin. Burial was in Joplin cemetery.
