Businessman. He was the founder of the Gold's Gym franchise. Born Sidney Gold, he opened his first gym in New Orleans, Louisiana, but in the mid-1960s he opened a gym back in his favorite city of Venice, California. He owned it for 6 years, finally selling it and the name "Gold's Gym," which the new owners franchised. It grew to be a multi-million dollar business. In 1977 he started another chain called "World Gym" and that grew to over 300 locations. He was a machinist, and invented many of the machines bodybuilders use regularly today. It was he who first took an interest in a young bodybuilder in his gym named Arnold Schwarzenegger, later to become one of the world's most recognizable actors, who later still, Governor of California. In 1991 when Gold became very ill, Schwarzenegger managed the World Gym until he was well again.
