Son of Joseph Feile and Mary Ann Hauber. Married to Cunigunda Neubert. Obit: Martin Feily is Dead at 75. Came to Petoskey Thirty-Eight Years Ago. Was the First of Nearly Twenty Families from St. Mary's Pa., to Locate in Petoskey. After suffering from palsy for more than twenty years, Martin Feily passed away at twelve o'clock (midnight) Tuesday at his farm home, three miles southeast of Petoskey, at the age of seventy-five years. Mr. Feily was the first settler to locate in this county from St. Mary's Pa., which city later sent nearly twenty families to locate here. He came by boat from Buffalo, N. Y. and took up a homestead in Bear Creek township in 1875. Petoskey was then but a small village and the G. R. & I Railroad company was just completing the track as far as this city. the section southeast of Petoskey was then a virgin forest and Mr. Feily was compelled to hew out a road from the village limits to his homestead, a distance of about three miles. He built a fine log house in his small clearing and it was here that the new families from his home state made their home during their first days in Petoskey. Many of the leading merchants and business men of Petoskey came here from St. Mary's and the Feily homestead was always their haven of rest upon arriving here. In the early sixties Mr. Feily spent three or four years in the copper country about Calumet upper peninsula. He is survived by the widow, four sons, John and Eward Feily, of this city; Fred, who makes his home at the old farm, and Elias Feily, whose home is in Kenosha, Wis., and five daughters, Miss Mary Feily, 'Sister' Veterbo, who is in the Holy Family hospital at Manitowoc, Wis.; Mrs. Fred Manthy, of Chicago; Miss Josephine Feily, "Sister Julian," a teacher in the Cross Village Catholic school, and Miss Amanda and Miss Anna Feily, who live at home. Despite his longe residence here Mr. Feily still retained his membership in the St. John's society at St. Mary's, Pa., and the society has been notified of his death. The funeral will be held from St. Francis church Friday morning at nine o'clock, with Father Bruno in charge. Interment will be made in St. Francis cemetery.
