John Kaplan was born circa 1870 in the small village of Pietrusza Wola, in the providence of Podkarpackie, Poland. He is the son of Walenty and Anna Kaplan. The spelling of the surname in Poland may have been Kaplon. They are a large Roman Catholic family. Ancestors may have been Orthodox Catholics. John and his brothers came to America (Ellis Island) around 1898. After a couple of years in New Rochelle, NY, John moved to Fall River, MA. It is here that he marries Mary Gajda (1880-1952). They later moved to Cumberland, RI (Valley Falls). John and Mary Kaplan had 7 children. John passed away on 21 September 1930 from carcinoma of the throat.
