In 1860 Nancy Ann was living with her son James A. Bales in Campbells, Washington Co., Tennessee. One of her other son's, Jacob Bales age 25 was living next door with his wife Elizabeth C. Shanks Bales .Jacob died in the Civil War.

Nancy gave birth to a illegitimate son a few years after her husband Stephen died. This is discussed very openly in her pension application papers as there are friends of Nancy Ann's assisting in her bid for son William's Civil War pension. Her son James A. Bales swore to the fact his brother William was the illegitimate son of his mother Nancy Ann Milburn Bales.
