The son of Stephen Bales (1790-1850) Pennsylvania , and Nancy Ann Milburn 1799-1868) Tennessee,
James's grandparents were Rev. William H. Milburn (1763-1838 ) Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia and Bethia Hutchinson (1766-1862 )Virginia, His grandmother Bethia died at age 96.

Before 1850 the family was torn apart by the death of his father and each of James's siblings were living in different households in Distict 9 in Greene Co., Tennessee.It is not known where his mother was at this time, she was alive in 1860 living with James, her son
Jacob lived next door with his wife Elizabeth. James stayed with his mother Nancy until her death .

James married Martha Ann McMackin April 10, 1869 in Greene Co., Tennessee.
Martha was the daughter of Andrew McMackin (1823-1890) Tennessee and Margaret Jane Armstrong(1825-1849)Tennessee.

By some accounts the family moved to Missouri in 1878 and this is where Martha died. No records have been found of her death in Tennessee or Missouri. In 1850 Martha was living with her uncle and Aunt,the George E.Grubbs family in Greene Co. Her mother's sister Mary Ann Armstrong married George E. Grubbs. Martha is back with her father and his new wife in the 1860 census .She is found in the 1870 census records with husband James Bales.
Martha was 14 years younger then James being born in 1849 in Greene Co, Tennessee.

By 1880 James was a widower living with his sister and her husband Andrew Nelson and Elizabeth Bales Tedlock in Lincoln, Dallas, Missouri. He had all four of his children with him.

Daughter., Lydia was named after this writer's great grandmother and James's niece
Lydia Emaline Tedlock, who was daughter to James's sister Elizabeth Bales Tedlock.She had the middle name of Elizabeth which was probably after her Aunt Elizabeth.
James was living with his daughter Lidie and her family in 1900.

J.N. Bales, aged 66 years, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Andrew Bales. The funeral services were held Monday from the Mustang church, conducted by Rev. Rhinehart of the M.E. church and the body was buried in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Bales was formerly a resident of Carrol county, Missouri, at which place one son, Wm. Bales is now living. Two children are living here, Andrew Bales, with whom he made his home, and Mrs. Lizzie Williams. Another son, John Bales, is living at Great Bend, Kansas.
The deceased had not been well for a long time, but bore his illness with fortitude. A large circle of friends sympathize with the relatives in their bereavement and followed the body to the grave as a mark of friendship to the dead and the living.

James Bales died at the home of his son eleven miles southwest of Yukon at 5:40 o’clock, last Sunday morning, aged 66 years. The cause of death was consumption. Funeral services were held at the residence on Monday, conducted by Rev. Rinehart.
