Originally from Sivas, Turkey, he left with his new wife and family in 1913 to escape persecution, and just two years later much of his family was wiped out in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. He arrived at Ellis Island on the SS Chicago on August 26, 1913 with his wife, two younger brothers Osgan and Avedis, his younger sister Vartanoush Rose, and his mother. His brother David had already come to the US and his father had died in Sivas, possibly of cholera. Vahagun first settled in Springfield, Massachusetts where his daughter Araxie was born in August 1914. Shortly after Vahagun got a job in the Budd Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, from his work as a coppersmith back in Turkey. There they had two sons Edward Artzerounian, and Higasoom David Artzerounian. Vahagun was short at 5'5" but had a big personality. His wife died at age 45 and Vahagun never remarried.
