Robert A. Brooks and Nancy Jane Pipes Brooks were my 2x great grandparents. I've had a terrible time finding Bertie because her parents listed her on the 1900 census as an 11 year old. They must have been confused and simply listed ALL of their children including their long deceased Bertie. When a Great Aunt told me she died as a baby, I thought she was crazy, I had the proof she was alive in 1900 basing it on that one census...never put 100% faith in those darn census records! LOL!
I just noticed your new comment on Bertie's memorial. record. I don't think the death date is wrong on the tombstone. I think the census is wrong. I think they simply just listed the names of all their children, deceased or not. Notice the question asking Nancy Jane how many children she'd given birth to and how many were living? The number 13 was written for how many children she'd given birth to, and then the number 12 for how many children were living. Later on, it looks like a 3 was written over the 2, perhaps later on when the census checkers noticed that there were 13 children listed. My great Aunt, the daughter of Patrick, Bertie's brother, stated emphatically that Bertie died as a baby. I just thought she was remembering wrong, but I now believe she is correct. I have pictures of almost every child in that family, but none of Bertie. My grandparents never spoke of her, but spoke often of all the other siblings in great detail. I've combed newspaper accounts and found many death announcements and other articles on the family, but nothing has turned up for Bertie. But I'm going to keep looking.
