Dr. Van B. Philpot Died In Memphis
Dr. Van B. Philpot, distinguished retired Mississippi surgeon and hospital superintendent who moved to Memphis from Holly Springs three and a half years ago, died at Baptist Hospital early Monday after two months' illness He was 71.

Dr. Philpot was a past president of Mississippi State Hospital Association and of the Mid South Post-graduate Medical Assembly, was three times chairman of the section on surgery of Mississippi Chapter of American College of Surgeons. He was the founder and former editor of The Mississippi Doctor, a medical journal.

Born in Vardaman, he was a fellow of the American College of SUrgeons and took post-graduate work at Tulane, Columbia, New York Polyclinic, Harvard and Cook County Hospital in ROchester, Minn. He was superintendent -surgeon at North Mississippi Hospital in Holly Springs 10 years, and, before that, for 27 years superindentent and suregon in charge of the Houston Hospital in which he had a controlling interest.

His wife died last May 31. He leaves his son Dr. Van B. Philpot Jr. of Caribou, Maine; three daughters, Mrs. W. C. Sandusky Jr. of Memphis, Mrs. Arthur Taylor Jr. of Como, and Mrs. D. M. Nelson of Greenville, S.C.; his sistter, Mrs. James T. Rushing of Houston and 18 grandchildren.

FUneral services were held at National Funeral Home in Memphis Tuesday Morning with Dr. H. T. Wood of Memphis officiating. Followed by services at Houston Christian Church. Burial was in Houston Cemetery with Pryor Funeral Home of Houston in charge.
