As a young man he was baptized into the Christian faith and became a member of the Baptist Church.
He was married on July 1, 1908, in Creston, Iowa, to Mattie Jane Wilson. To this union was born eight children, five boys and three girls. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty; a son, Robert, and his wife, Mattie, who died on September 13, 1965.
Robert Briggs Austin spent the early part of his life as a barber and the latter part of his life was spent on a farm near Lorimor, from which he retired in 1953. In 1954 he moved to Afton and lived there until he entered a nursing home in Winterset in 1965.
He is survived by four sons, Leonard of De Soto; Forrest, of Afton; Ivan, of Peru; Jerry, of St. Charles; and two daughters, Freida Dodd of Omaha, Nebr.; and Eunice Harper of Lorimor, Iowa. He is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren, also a host of relatives and friends.
