OBITUARY (courtesy of Paul E. Hodel):
DEATH OF MRS. MARY HARTLEY
The death of Mrs. Mary Hartley occurred in this city last Tuesday morning at an early hour, after a lingering illness, at the age of 76 years; but death was not unexpected as she had been failing in health for some time, owing to infirmities due to her advanced years, during which she has had the devoted care of her family of grown children.
Mrs. Hartley was a native of Wales, coming to this country with relatives in 1854, landing at New Orleans; and later crossing the planes to Utah, and locating in Salt Lake City, where, in 1855, she was married to Henry James Hartley. They left Salt Lake two years later and came to California, making their home at White Rock, in El Dorado County; and here Mr. Hartley died in 1888. Eight children survive to mourn the loss of a good mother: Henry Hartley of La Port, Plumas county; Mrs. Sarah Mugford and Mrs. Alice Sylvester of Sacramento, Mrs. Mary Pritchard of Berkeley, Mrs. Nellie Pilatti of Diamond Springs, Mrs. Annie Edner, Hattie and David Hartley of Placerville.
Mrs. Hartley also leaves thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
The funeral took place Thursday afternoon, from the Methodist church, with services by Rev. S. J. Buck, and was largely attended by friends of the family, to pay the last tribute of respect to a good woman.
