Lawrence Guy "Mike" Greig was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on April 7, 1906, to Ole Guy and Anna May Michael. He attended public school until 4th grade. After the death of his older brother and his father, his early years were spent with his mother, traveling and living in a cook wagon, in which she cooked for the oil field crews and harvest crews throughout North Dakota, Canada, and Wyoming. He also lived part of that time with his aunt and uncle. At some point, he took the name Mike Greig. Mike in honor of his dad, O. G. Michael, and Greig after his mother and step-father. Mike later finished his education studying to be a welder and pipefitter.

He met Ruth G. Evans in Wyoming. They were married in Caldwell, Idaho on May 1, 1933. They had three children. Ruth preceded him in death in April of 1956.

Mike worked as a welder and pipefitter for Morrison-Knudsen Co. in Boise until 1933. He traveled and held various jobs, such as working on the construction of the Flaming Gorge Dam in Utah during the 1960's. He settled in Kemmerer, Wyoming and worked for Morrison-Knudsen (later under Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co.) at the Kemmerer coal mines from 1964 to 1976.
