Thomas J. Smith was the fourth child of James Smith and Elizabeth (Daniel) Smith. He was born in Oconee, Illinois. He was a brother to John Smith, Jane (Bartlett), William Henry Smith, Nellie (Williams) and Sarah (Shutt). After moving with his parents to Newtonia, Missouri, he married Caroline "Carrie" Williams on June 3, 1877 in McDonald County, Missouri. They had four children, all born in Purdy, Missouri; Claude Roy Smith, Guy Smith (who died in infancy), Florence Maude (Stokes) and Anna Bess (Church). Thomas was a school teacher in Purdy, Missouri and after attending Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, Missouri became County Mine Inspector for Christian County, Illinois. Later he became City Clerk for Pana, Illinois where he lived for many years. T.J. and Carrie moved to Los Angeles, California in 1930 to live with daughter Anna Bess.
