James Smith was born in Tennessee but moved to Missouri with his father at a young age. He married Elizabeth Daniel on August 17, 1839 in Platt County, Missouri. In 1843 James and Elizabeth moved to Audubon Township in Montgomery Co., near Oconee, Illinois where they farmed and raised a family. Their family included John Smith, Jane (Bartlett), William Henry Smith, Thomas Jefferson Smith, Nellie (Williams) and Sarah (Shutt). James was one of the founding members of the Oconee Masons. About 1875 James and Elizabeth moved to Newtonia, Missouri to farm. James died in Purdy, Missouri in 1887. His wife Elizabeth returned with daughter Sarah to Oconee. Daughter Nellie and son William also lived in Oconee while daughter Jane (Bartlett) lived in nearby Ramsey, Illinois. Thomas and his family also returned to nearby Pana, Illinois. James little grandson Guy Smith is buried nearby.
