Obituary for James Baxter Thompson.

COLUMBIA, Nov. 20 (Special) — Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Methodist Church of Columbia for J. B. "Uncle Jim" Thompson, 77, prominent resident and former tax assessor of Caldwell parish, who died Saturday morning.

Services will be conducted by Rev. Sam Holloway, assisted by Rev. George Jenkins, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Columbia, Rev. John Lee, of Glenmora, La., and Rev. J. D. Kitchenham [sic Kitchingham], of Columbia.

Interment will be in the Welcome Home Cemetery at Grayson, with the Masonic Order 164 F and AM in charge of final rites. Services will be directed by Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

Thompson was born at Rosefield, La. on June 6, 1877, the son of the late Hardie B. Thompson. On October 25, 1900, he was married to Miss Flora Myers of the Ward 7 Community of Caldwell Parish. They had six children, all of whom survive.

He served on the Caldwell Parish School Board for 16 years, and was president of the board 12 years of that time. He also served for a number of years as deputy sheriff of the parish. He was a member of the Board of Stewards of the First Methodist Church at Columbia, a member of the Eastern Star and had taken an active part in all civic and community activities.

For eight years, Thompson was tax assessor of Caldwell Parish and served for ten years on the Louisiana Tax Commission at Baton Rouge, from which capacity he retired in 1950.

Survivors are his wife of Columbia; one son, James Hardie Thompson of Lake Charles, La.; five daughters: Mrs. W. A. Coates, West Monroe; Mrs. A. P. Crockett, Grayson; Mrs. W. W. Halbert, Waterproof; Mrs. W. D. Dishman, Cleveland, Tex., and Mrs. B. F. Sellars, Dallas, Tex.; one brother, S. H. Thompson, Columbia; three sisters, Mrs. Denie Huthnance, Alexandria; Mrs. Eula Broadway, Grand Cane; Mrs. Pauline Sorrells, Baton Rouge; twelve grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Clark Hester, O. H. Watson, Edgar Duke, Everson Coates, C. F. Lively, W. R. Lively, John J. McKeithen and C. N. Miley.
