She was born in Lexington and was a longtime resident of Billerica before moving to Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island, F.L., in 1971.
After her husband passed away in 1984 she moved to Bradenton, F.L. where she lived for many years.
In 2004, Mary Louise moved to St. Augustine, F.L. to be close to her daughter and granddaughter.
She spent many summers in New England with family and friends, and remained very active working part time as a caregiver and chef into her 70s.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Bradenton, F.L., and enjoyed gardening, baking and knitting.
She is survived by one son, Robert Gates of Peabody, M.A.; two daughters, Dorothy Thibodeau of St. Augustine, F.L. and Nancy Gates of Boston, M.A.; one sister Evelyn Van Sickle of Nokomis, F.L.; one brother J. Archer Ballou of Whitinsville, M.A.; four grandchildren, Daniel Thibodeau, Laura Archer, Robert and Jeffrey Gates; three great-grandchildren, Samantha Gates, Shelby Archer and Nicole Gates.
