W. C. Wooten, 88 Taken In Death
W. C. Wooten, farmer, 88, of Chipley Ford Road, passed away at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning at Lynnhaven nursing home near Mocksville. Death came unexpectedly due to a heart attack.
Mr. Wooten was born May 25, 1867, in the Loray community son of the late Festus Franklin and Sarah Huie Wooten. He was educated in Iredell county schools, Bethany and Statesville academies.
He was married to the former Mary Adams December 26, 1893, who preceded him in death March 13, 1954.
Mr. Wooten was a member of the First Presbyterian church having served as elder in Clio and First Presbyterian churches for over 40 years. He taught Sunday school for many years. He taught school in the Iredell county school system for more than 20 years, served on the Iredell county school board for 12 years, was deputy sheriff under Sheriff Wycoff, a member of the J.O.U.A.M., and director of the People's Loan and Savings bank for several years. He retired from civic life in his later years to his farm next to the South River Baptist Church.
Mr. Wooten is survived by one son, Hugh H. Wooten, Falls Church VA., and four sisters, Mrs. S. Groce and Mrs. T. G. Walls, Statesville, Mrs. E. A. Massey, Harmony, and Mrs. Lewis Moore, Charlotte.
One son, Leland A. Wooten, passed away in 1952.
Funeral services for Mr. Wooten will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday from the First Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Robert Mull, assistant pastor. Interment will follow in the family plot in Oakwood cemetery.
The family requests no flowers and asks that contributions in lieu of flowers be given to the charitable organization of this community.
