Jake was my Uncle. He was a cotton farmer in "the bottoms" near Monette and Lake City, Arkansas. He was born in Tennessee and migrated to Van Buren County with his Father and Step-Mother. He later lived with his Sister in Moorefield Township, Independence County, Arkansas. It was there he met and married my Dad's older Sister, Elsie Belle Walden on 7 Oct 1933. Later they moved to Craighead County, Arkansas where Jake started his cotton farming as a sharecropper. He moved his family back and forth between Independence and Craighead counties; finally settling on some property that backed up to the St. Francis River near Monette. I remember Jake as an easy going man who kidded me and his children regularily. He also was known for giving his children a variety of nicknames. Jake liked to trade things; horses, cars, trucks, etc. The most famous incident I remember, in that regard, was the time in the 1950's when Jake was bringing his family up to a reunion at Grandpa and Grandma Walden's house. He was delayed because he traded vehicles with some man while crossing Black River on the ferry. That was my Uncle Jake!
