Edith taught elementary school in Ironia and planned on becoming a teacher. She became ill with St. Vitus Dance, a form of Rheumatic Fever, and was unable to begin studies at Montclair Normal School as planned. She went to work for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Co. on 5 Sep 1917, as a ticket clerk.

Edith died of a heart attack following a broken hip. All her life she had suffered from "sick, dizzy spells" that often kept her in bed for several days.
