John was attending seminary when he contracted "brain fever," encephalitis. The family credited "Buffalo Lithia Water" with saving his life. Since he had to relearn reading & writing, he was unable to continue with school. He became a farmer, although not very productive. "He was a very gentle man. My recollection of him was as a very young child, sitting on his knee, while he sang, 'One little, two little, three little Indians.'" Eleanor (Hugg) Casagrand
Letter, 27 Apr 1892: "The Wolfe sunday school wishing at this time to present you with some token of their respect & esteem have selected this chair not so much for its value but that you may know we appreciate the good work you have done in this sabbath school especialy in building the fire that our room might be warm and comfortable during the winter months. We shall miss you very much but shall ever pray that Gods blessing may attend you & yours through life...."
