OBITUARY Iron River (Michigan) Reporter Jan 19 1932 "Hold Rites For Joseph Gibbs: Founder of Iron River Mercantile Company Dies In Green Bay"

Funeral services for Joseph Gibbs, 86, founder of the Iron River Mercantile company, were held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Patrick's church at Green Bay, Wis., with the Rev. Fr. McCarthy officiating. Burial was in Green Bay.

Mr. Gibbs died at his home in Green Bay Thursday morning at 5:20 o'clock following a three day illness. Death is attributed to a paralytic stroke. Up until a few days before his death Mr. Gibbs had enjoyed good health.
Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs moved to Green Bay and established residence there about two years ago. They came to Iron River in 1908 and Mr. Gibbs, in partnership with his son Louis Gibbs, at that time established the Iron River Mercantile company.

He came here from Escanaba, where he settled after coming to the upper peninsula about 40 years ago. He conducted a store at Garden and two other stores in neighboring towns. He was born in Plattsburg, N.Y. in February, 1845.

Mr. Gibbs is survived by his widow, Henrietta of Green Bay; a daughter Mrs. Emma Deloria of Iron River, who was at his bedside at the time of his death; and two sons, Louis of Iron River and H.D. Gibbs of Perkins, Mich. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Those who attended the funeral from Iron River were Mrs. Deloria, her daughter Claudia, Louis Gibbs, and Dr. and Mrs. Reginald Deloria.
