The strong railway tunnel in the background saved Gilbert and Frances' lives from German bombs during the Blitz in WWII when several dropped and exploded one after another whilst they lay flat inside with his brother, Reginald Purnell -- Gilbert on top of his wife protecting her. The blast just blew her hat across the tunnel.

14 Charlton Road, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol showing the rear garden. Timothy John Purnell laid out most of this garden and built an observatory on the top of a brick built air raid shelter just behind the spot where the camera is positioned in 1966 spending many bitterly cold nights stargazing in winters.
The tall horse chestnut tree appearing in blossom above the house was about 60 feet and dated from 1848. He read "Little Women" under it and had a special affinity for the tree as it dated from the year of the real story.
