Mary Ivannah Snead was born April 14, 1814, near Richmond, Va. She married Mr. Thomas Ellett in 1834, and moved to Western Illinois, part of Warren County in 1836. On their arrival in Monmouth, Illinois, she boarded at the old house of Aunt Betty McNeil, on East Broadway Avenue (where now stands the John Carr Manor.) Afterward they took up their residence in the building known as Cowan's blacksmith shop (no longer standing) on West Broadway. The family lived in Monmouth only a short time, taking up their residence in what later became Henderson County. Of the first union, the deceased mother leaves four children, Virginius C.; Thomas F. Ellett; Edwin H. Ellett; and Mrs. Sophia Mills.

After Mr. Ellett dying in 1842, she returned to Virginia. Mary, quite possibly at the encouragement of her children and or family ties, she traveled back to western Illinois and married a family friend, Mr. Thomas Rice on April 12, 1849. Mr. and Mrs. Rice moved to Monmouth, where they resided until their death. Mr. and Mrs. Rice borne five children; James Albert, born Jan. 7, 1850, died June 1, 1856; William A., born Dec. 13, 1851, died at Rock Port, Mo., where he was a bank cashier, Dec. 5, 1883; Annie and Minnie were born July 5, 1856, and the latter died June 5, 1864; Jessie Jane was born July 5, 1858, and died May 7, 1859.

In the 1860 federal census, Edwin & Sophia Ellett (two of Thomas Ellett's children) were living in Henderson County with Thomas & Mary Rice. In the 1850 census, Edwin, Sophia, Virginius, & Thomas Ely were living with them and James A. Rice (Mary's first son with Thomas Rice) had just been born.

Mr. Rice was for several years engaged in the fruit and nursery business. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and since the demise of the old Whig party, has been a Republican. He has always been noted for his generosity, his integrity and an unerring devotion to the best interests of society, and as one of the truly representative men of Warren County.
