Edwin Hardin Ellett was the fourth of four children born to Thomas Cummings and Mary nee Irwin Ellett, who had emigrated from Virginia to the the newly-opened lands of Henderson County, Illinois.
Edwin married Viola Stockton on October 18, 1866 in Henderson County, Illinois, and that is where their two older children (Harry Lilburn and Mabel) were born. He then moved the family to Cook County Illinois where the rest of his children were born: Mary (Bliss), Thomas Stockton, Jessie (Mitchell), and Edwin Jr.
He was a cattle dealer, and then worked as a merchant for the livestock commission in Chicago.
