Roy was born in Hollis, Maine to Watson and Jennie Burnham. He married Melvina Vittum in 1904 in Maine. His wife died in 1920 and shortly after he decided to move to Minnesota, where two of his brothers were already living.
He met Svea Elenora "Nora" Thoren and they married in 1926. Together they had Arthur, Mildred, and Elsie. He was also father to Nora's daughter, Lorraine.
Roy died in 1949 and was survived by his wife and children.
