Barbara was born in Jan 1814 (declared self aged 36 in 1850) in Hempfield Township, the daughter of Christian Friedrich Bührer and his wife Elisabeth Lafferty. She was the first of 15 children of the couple and the Bierer descendants are prolific in Western Pennsylvania. Barbara had 12 children with Daniel Welty, and died shortly after the birth of the last, possibly from birth trauma. Her grave marker was not placed until after the death of second wife Sarah, when the memorial was raised to all three. William Bierer Welty, adjacent to this grave, was her son, killed at the Battle of Antietam 17 Sep 1862.
