He was born Oct. 4, 1912, in Bloomfield, the son of Joe E. and Lillie M. Smith Layton. He and the former Jessie D. Sain were married Apr. 27, 1945.
He was employed with the Mississippi County Drainage District for several years, and was a member of the New Life Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, J.C. Layton; a daughter, Mary Abernathy; three brothers, Richard, Lester and Ralph Layton; a sister, Nancy Johnson; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral service will be held today at Shelby Funeral Chapel here. Burial will be in the Anniston Cemetery.
