James Hardie Cochran was born the 7th child of Mary Elizabeth Church and William Oliver Cochran on July 12, 1900. His mother died when he was only 5 years old and he was raised by his oldest sister, Ella May, who took car of her younger siblings after her mothers death on February 7, 1915.
This was a family that loved to be together and express their love for each other.
James' father, grandfather, and great-grand had in times past lived in Brush Creek - Morgan Springs area of perry county. When James was a teenager, Oliver Cochran set up small sawmill camps in the area. Being too far for the children to walk to school, Oliver arranged for James to stay with Mr. Lonnie Coley so he could attend North Perry school. James loved to read and was seen many times in the school building at night reading books by an oil lamp.
During this time he met and later married Mattie Lucille "J" Washburn the oldest child of Cleavland W. and Para Monts Washburn. After marrying James worked in lumber related jobs for several years.
After living in Cedartown, GA, Mobile and Selma, AL they moved back to North Perry. Earlier, Mattie J's parents had purchased the Dr. Jones Place and they settled permanently in a house on this property which he later enlarged to accommodate his family. This house was previous the residence of Mattie J's younger brother "Buck" Washburn.
Listed here are their 6 sons and 1 daughter. James Oliver born May 20, 1930, John Thomas born Jan 1932, William Henry born May 1934, Earnest Evans born Dec. 1935, Robert Gray born July 1938, Marcus Leo born 1939, and Para Elizabeth born April 1944. All of the boys were named for their uncles except the oldest was named for the father. The daughter was named for her two grandmothers.
James was a strong boned, sli built with ruddy complexion and strawberry blond curly hair, but more importantly, an honest, sincere, hardworking, no nonsense person. He enjoyed the simple things in life like making toys for his children and reading to them after supper. James also enjoyed reading his Sunday School books and his Bible.
After his children were gone, he spent many pleasurable moments sitting on his porch with a cup of coffee, watching birds and wild animals play at the edge of his yard and garden. He loved showing his grandchildren the birds and animals.
James enjoyed gospel quartet music and singing along with his collection of cassette tapes. When younger, he sang in a men's quartet and always loved singing the hymns at Waycross and Mt. Ivah churches.
James became a carpenter and built and remodeled many houses. Later James started building houses for his children, who furnished the materials and helped their father when they could.
While helping a neighbor on February 1987, James has a paralyzing stroke and was taken by ambulace to Druid City hospital in Tuscaloosa. After 4 months there, he was moved to Perry County Hospital and nursing home for the remainder of his life.
On May 24 1989, Mattie "j" died unexpectedly while getting dressed to go site with James. Her death was not known until later that afternoon when she was found by her daughter Elizabeth.
The last year of James's life was perplexed with bouts of pneumonia. Parts of his body and speech were paralyzed from the stroke. But he remained a joy to talk with and visit during his confinement.
