Her father was killed in a farm accident when Melba was only five, so she was raised by her mother along with her five brothers and sisters on a small farm near Vernal. Melba attended Maeser Elementary School and Uinta High School in Vernal. Next she moved to Provo, Utah where see attended Brigham Young University and met her husband Lyle Taylor Christensen. The two were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22nd 1943.

From 1985 to 1989 Melba took up residence with her daughter Elaine and son-in-law John Shafer in Cedar City, Utah where she helped with the four young grandsons. In 1993, after a brief return to Glendale, Melba moved in with her daughter Louise and son-inlaw Kerry Patterson in Provo, Utah. There she lived out her years helping around the house, working at the temple, and serving wherever called.

Melba was an example of service, dedication, and righteous living to all who knew her. Her children and grandchildren have fond memories of the many handmade items she made for them along with the wonderful stories she told. A skilled seamstress, Melba used her talent to help dress her children and young grandchildren. When her granddaughter Rebecca went on a mission, Melba sewed all of her clothing for her. Her hobbies included: sewing, knitting, reading, crossword puzzles, and walking.

Melba was always active in the LDS church where she served as: Primary President and Teacher, Young Women's President and Advisor, Relief Society Counselor and Teacher, Genealogy Extraction Specialist, Stake Missionary, and a Temple Ordinance Worker.
