Memorial services for Marion Kelly Fears, 84, were held December 14 at Fair Oaks United Methodist Church in Marietta. The Rev. Hoyt Allen officiated. She died December 9 following a brief illness.

Mrs. Fears was born to the late W.C. Kelly and Inis Cook Kelly in Jasper County. She moved to Marietta in 1943 and retired in 1978 after a 27-year career at Kennestone Hospital. Her career included being Director of Admissions, Communications, and Information for 24 years. She helped organize the Kennestone Hospital Retirement Club in 1987 and presided over the group until this year.

She was a charter member of Fair Oaks United Methodist Church, active in the 50th Club and the Jubileers Club, and she taught Sunday School for 50 years. Mrs. Fears was well-known for her leadership with senior citizens in Cobb County as she was selected in 1981 by the Governor as the Georgia delegate to the White House Conference on Aging.

She was appointed president of the Cobb County Senior Citizens Council in 1982 and 1983 and was on the planning committee for building several senior centers throughout the county.

In 1984 she received the Beta Zeta Diana Award sponsored by the Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Sorority. This award recognizes the achievement of a local woman who contributes significantly to the community in some area of service.

She was instrumental in establishing the countywide education program for senior citizens, Enrichment of Life Movement (ELM), which inaugurated its first classes in the fall of 1984. For 15 years she served as the Director then continued as CEO of the Board in 1999.

Her husband of 65 years, Oscar Baldwin Fears, Sr., and brothers, Wesley and Champ Kelly, and sisters, Vivian Bearden and Lucille Thornton, all of Jasper County, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughters, Jessica Manning of Marietta and Phyllis Smith of Big Canoe; son, O.B. "Bo" Fears, Jr. of Pleasant-on, Cal.; grandchildren, Dr. Craig and Kathy Smith, Todd and Tina Smith, Traci and Eric Skidmore, Kelly and Joe Wallace, Dana and Marshal Day, Ashley and Robert Dorsey, Bo and Erin Fears, and Taylor and Allison Fears; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Kitchens of Covington; sister-in-law, Mildred Kelly of Monticello; and a number of other relatives and friends.
