John married Martha Malinda Berry in February of 1839, in Murray County, GA.
They had at least 11 children together before John was killed in 1863.
Children of John and Malinda:
Mary Adeline Nicholson McIntire Stogsdill 1840-1928
Louisa Nicholson Depriest 1841-1901
Tamar Jane Nicholson Casey McIntire Thomas 1843-1916
Martha Elizabeth Nicholson Casey 1844-1932
Sarah Lucretia Nicholson Rustin Thomas 1845-1921
James Andrew Nicholson 1847-1924
Catherine Nicholson Depriest 1851-1886
William Alexander Nicholson 1854-1944
John A. Nicholson 1856-1936
Lafayette Nicholson 1857-1866
David A. Nicholson 1860-1947
John served in Powell's Company of Tennessee Volunteers during the Second Seminole War (Florida War) during the conflicts and removal of the Seminole people.
In November of 1863 union troops on scout commanded by Lieut. John W. Boyd came across the Nicholson family's double log cabin and burned it to the ground. John was killed as well as others, including Jesse Story, as they were considered confederate sympathizers by the Union troops. John's wife and all his children survived the incident.
NOTE: Death date inscription is incorrect. It seems when the stone was made/inscribed later by family, the wrong year was given. This particular style of stone was most common in the 1875–1890 timeframe, which tells me this stone was made/laid sometime after his death, by family.
